Theatre du Soleil Acting Workshop

Tutors: Vincent Mangado & Dominique Jambert
Fee: €200
Venue : The Factory Performance Space, Sligo, Ireland
Time: 10.00 – 17.00

This workshop will be led by Vincent Mangado and Dominique Jambert, long established members of renowned theatre company Theatre du Soleil, founded by Ariane Mnouchkine in 1964 and based at La Cartoucherie, Paris, France.

From its inception, Theatre du Soleil  have been characterized by a commitment to long-term collaborative rehearsal processes; the merging of a wide variety of art forms both Western and non-Western, including music, dance, and puppetry.

The structure of the workshop will be based on the way the company rehearse using the various devices and methodologies that have shaped and created the many productions of Theatre du Soleil.

The program will comprise of :

  • A physical training, based on play and dance movements, developed with the cooperation of the National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance.  The purpose is to warm-up the body and the imagination, both individual and collective.

  • Improvisations led by music. The purpose is to open ourselves, not to dance. To listen to the music, to our partners. We will explore different spaces, to feel their diverse needs and requirements.

  • Based on these improvisations, we will prepare more complex scenes with chosen text using props and costumes.

‘There is no theatre without poetry, legend, nor without stories for today... what kind of work can be performed with that intention? This is what has been explored for almost 60 years by Theatre du Soleil. We do not have an official answer!, only great anticipation of the possibility of  exploring this with you, with our theatre’s tools : make-up, costumes, swords, horses, wings…childhood play! That’s the word.’
