Ubu Roi
Sometimes described as the most punk play of all time, Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi was first performed in 1896. A wild comedy, it follows newly crowned Pa Ubu who terrorizes his subjects through greed and violence, sparking invasion and revolution.
Oafish and greedy, Papa Ubu is spurred on by his shrewish wife (Mama Ubu) to murder the King of Poland and seize the throne. Tyrannical rule, mass slaughter, excessive taxation, and eventual chaos follow forcing the Ubus to flee Poland for France amidst rebellion and Russian invasion, all while parodying Shakespeare and satirizing power, greed, and bourgeois society.
