Marco Kegal Quartet
The Marco Kegel Quartet consists of Marco Kegel on
alto saxophone, Dan Nicholas on Guitar, Johnny Daly on
Bass, and Thorsten Grau on drums. The quartet has
existed as a working band for over a year with all
members based in the Netherlands, and has played in
some of holland's most prestigeous jazz clubs,
including Amsterdam's Bimhuis, Rotterdam's Dizzy, and
the Hague Jazz Festival.
Marco Kegel (36) comes from The Hague, Holland.
As a young talent, Kegel finished his conservatory
studies at the age of 21, by which time he was already
perfoming with some of Holland's top musicians
including Frans Elsen and the Rein de Graaff trio.
Kegel has been on numerous recordings and has several
albums under his own name, including "Jonquil," a 2003
date with Alto saxophone legend, Lee Konitz, plus
arrangements for string quartet by co-leader Axel
Hagen. He has played several times at Holland's
esteemed North Sea Jazz Festival, is a member of the
Dutch Jazz Orchestra, and has performed with such
luminaries as Konitz, Buddy DeFranco, Bob Brookmeyer,
and James Moody.
Dan Nicholas (29) hails from New York City, and is
a five year resident of the Netherlands. For 10 years
he has been a dedicated student of the world renowned
pianist and teacher, Dr. Barry Harris. In addition to
performing with Harris in Italy and Holland, he has
played in New York with drummers Frank Gant and Jimmy
Lovelace, and in Holland with John Ruocco, Ferdinand
Povell, and Peter Beets. As a guitarist, Nicholas is
poised between the classic styles of Wes Montgomery
and Jimmy Rainey, and the more contemporary concepts
of Jim Hall and Kurt Rosenwinkle.
Johnny Daly (32) is a native of Dublin, and has
played with many of Ireland's finest jazz musicians,
including Louie Stewart, and the Buckley Brothers. In
2002, Daly moved to the Netherlands to study with Hein
Van de Geyn, one of Europe's most acclaimed double
bassists. During his time in Holand, he has played
with the likes of Houston Person and Deborah Brown.
In 2002-3, he toured extensively through Europe and
Asia with Rodrigo y Gabriella, and in 2004 and 2005,
he completed two successful tours of Ireland with his
own band, featuring the world renowned drummer, Eric
Ineke. Stylistically, Daly leans toward the rock
solid accompaniment of Paul Chambers, Ray Brown,
George Mraz, and Peter Washington.
Thorsten Grau (33) is originally from Germany, but
has made the Netherlands his home since 1995. He is a
highly gifted and versetile drummer, and has played
all through Europe in a variety of different contexts.
The music played by the Marco Kegel Quartet
displays by a deep knowlege and love of the classic
jazz period. Following the example of Charlie Parker,
Marco Kegel has created a unique and personal voice on
the alto saxophone, continually finding new wrinkles
in the be-bop language. All members of the group
similarly use the jazz tradition as a foundation and
inspiration for their own personal musical
exploration. Though the group focus is on lyrical
interplay, they keep a quiet fire burning continually
through melodic intensity and hard swinging.
Repertoire ranges from Kegel's Tristano inspired
originals to fresh arrangements of American Songbook
standards and jazz classics.
